With obesity and heart disease on the rise in the United States, it is more important than ever to eat healthy!  Students of an HCC Honors Leadership class worked together to make a vertical food garden for Sulfur Springs Elementary in Tampa, Florida.

What is a vertical garden?

A vertical garden is a method of growing plants up against a wall, hanging from a structure.  This is often to save space in a small area.  This can make it much easier to harvest vegetables growing vertically, as it can assist disabled people who may not be able to bend down.
Typical vertical gardens are built to the height of an adult.  The height is usually around eight feet tall.  We have taken this idea and reduced the height to four feet so younger children can reach this, and harvest.

What did the HCC Honors Students do?

HCC Honors Students worked together to design and construct a vertical garden out of materials available to us.  Using PVC pipe and discarded plastic bottles, we were able to construct a vertical garden in which to plant different vegetables.  We hope that our project will help educate young students about the benefits of healthy eating, and knowing where your food comes from.
