Helping to foster healthy eating habits among children and adolescents in Tampa Bay
What is it?
Spinach grows best in temperatures between 35-75 degrees F.
The best time to plant is in Florida's winter months since spinach does not like the heat.
It is important that you use new seeds every year because they do not store well.
We recommend planting 4 seeds per cube.
Spinach is an edible flower plant native to Central and Western Asia.
The leaves of the plant are consumed. It can provide many healthy nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamins A, C, E, and K, thiamin, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and manganese.
It improves blood glucose, lowers risk of cancer, reduces blood pressure, and improves bone health.
Tips
Harvesting
You can harvest the spinach as soon as the leaves look big enough to eat.
Cut the outer leaves first to encourage continued production.
Regular harvests will extend your plant's life cycle so make sure to stay on top of it!
If part of your harvest tastes bitter, discard the entire section of that plant to avoid it spreading, and plant a new seed.
